Pass Wallet

Which cards can you add as passes in Apple Wallet?

Check whether your card uses a fixed barcode, an issuer-provided pass, or another credential before creating an Apple Wallet copy.

A card with a fixed barcode may be a candidate for an Apple Wallet pass. A card that needs a payment network, a contactless access credential, or a changing ticket code needs the issuer’s supported method. Saving a copy does not prove that a merchant will accept it.

Astrum Computing makes Pass Wallet, a companion app for creating and customizing passes from barcodes, QR codes, and templates. It can help organize a suitable card; it cannot make an unsupported credential valid. Check the current app and purchase details before choosing it.

Start with the issuer’s option

Look in the issuer’s app, email, or website for Add to Apple Wallet. Use that route first when available. Apple’s pass instructions explain the add flow and recommend contacting the issuer if its pass is not supported.

A photo of a card and an official pass are different starting points. The official version may be the one the issuer expects you to present. Keep it rather than rebuilding it merely to change its appearance.

Check what the card actually uses

This table is a decision aid, not a list of guaranteed compatible merchants.

What you haveSensible next stepWhat to check
A loyalty or membership card with a fixed barcodeConsider creating a barcode pass if the issuer permits digital presentation.Does the merchant accept a phone display, and does its reader scan the original code?
A gift card with a fixed barcodeCheck the issuer’s Wallet option first; otherwise assess a barcode copy.Preserve the original card and any PIN. Creating a pass does not establish its balance.
A ticket or boarding pass with an official Wallet buttonAdd the issuer’s pass.Confirm the event or journey and the issuer’s current instructions.
A ticket whose code changes or expiresUse the issuer’s live app or official pass.A captured code can become unusable.
A payment card, transit credential, identity document, or door keyFollow the issuer’s dedicated Wallet enrollment process.A custom barcode pass does not recreate payment or access functionality.
A card with no scannable codeTreat a custom card as a reference only.A typed number or image does not create a working access credential.

A QR shape alone does not tell you which row applies. It might contain an identifier, a website address, or information that changes over time. Ask the issuer when the meaning is unclear.

Check Apple’s built-in creation option

Apple’s current pass-creation guide describes creating a pass from a photo or screenshot of a detected code, and a manual option in Wallet. Its requirements include an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, current iOS, and enabled visual intelligence for the documented flow; availability varies with device, language, and region.

If your phone offers this option and it handles your card, try it before installing another app. Apple’s guide also warns that a photo of an expiring or rotating code can produce a pass that does not work. Successful creation is only one part of compatibility.

Prepare a suitable card in Pass Wallet

For a card you are authorized to copy, start with a clear view of the original code. The current listing describes barcode, QR, and template-based creation plus editable text, images, and colors. In-app purchases may apply.

Use this workflow as a review checklist:

  1. Choose the app’s card-creation route for a barcode or photo, or start from a template.
  2. Check the imported number and code against the original. A visible membership number may differ from the value encoded in the barcode.
  3. Review the name and other details so you can recognize the card without changing its underlying identifier.
  4. Save the card and use its Apple Wallet action. Complete Apple’s add screen and check that the pass is present in Wallet.
  5. Test it with the intended merchant or venue while keeping the original available.

These are the steps to verify, not a claim that every issuer has been tested. A pass that appears correctly on your phone can still fail at the reader.

Barcode format is another compatibility check

Reading a code, displaying a code, and having a reader accept it are separate outcomes. Pass Wallet’s code handling includes QR, Aztec, PDF417, and Code 128; available Wallet formats can depend on the operating system and app release. Do not assume that recognizing an additional format means it can be exported unchanged on every supported iPhone.

Avoid changing the barcode style simply to make it look different. The encoded value and the reader’s expected format both matter. If a copy fails, compare it with the original and ask the issuer what it accepts. Do not treat a successful preview as proof of a successful checkout or entry.

Before relying on the pass

Use this original checklist at the place where you expect to use the card:

  • Source: I used the issuer’s official Wallet option if one was available.
  • Code: My copy preserves the intended identifier and does not depend on an expired screenshot.
  • Permission: The issuer permits this way of presenting the card.
  • Test: The intended reader or attendant accepted it.
  • Backup: I can still access the original card or issuer app if needed.

Keep card numbers, ticket codes, and PINs out of public screenshots. If the card is replaced or the issuer changes its code, review the saved pass again. A manually created copy should not be assumed to update itself.

For customization after you have confirmed compatibility, Pass Wallet offers an editable companion to Apple Wallet. Choose it for the organization and editing you need, while keeping the issuer’s acceptance rules as the final check.
