How to compress a GIF

  1. Choose your GIF. It stays on your device.
  2. Pick a compression level and, optionally, a target file size.
  3. Compare the result and download your GIF.

Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?

Gentle compression optimizes how the GIF is stored without reducing its image quality. Some GIFs are already well optimized. Balanced and strong compression can save more space by reducing colors and detail. Compare the previews to choose what works for your animation.

Can I make a GIF smaller than 256 KB?

Choose the 256 KB target. The compressor tries progressively stronger settings and, if allowed, smaller dimensions. It keeps every frame and preserves the original timing and loop settings. Some animations cannot meet a small target with these settings; the result clearly tells you when that happens.

Why won’t my GIF compress?

Files that are already optimized may not get smaller. This tool accepts GIFs up to 20 MB, 500 frames, and 4096 pixels on either side, with a combined animation size limit to keep browser memory use manageable. A large animation can exceed that limit even if the file is small. Try a shorter or lower-resolution GIF.

Do you upload my GIF?

No. Compression runs on your device using WebAssembly in a background worker. Your GIF’s contents, filename, and size aren’t included in analytics. You can cancel a running job or clear the result.
