How to review duplicate contacts on iPhone

Compare duplicate contact details before changing them. Learn Apple’s merge and link options and when Phone Doctor’s contact tools may help.

When two contact cards look alike, compare their details before removing either one. The useful result is a contact you can recognize and reach, with the numbers and addresses you need still attached.

Start with Apple Contacts. An additional cleaner app is optional. This guide focuses on contact decisions; for photos, use our duplicate-photo review guide.

Compare the cards before choosing an action

Open both entries and make a small checklist:

  • Identity: Is this the same person, or two people with the same name?
  • Numbers: Does one entry contain a work number and the other a personal number? Keep the useful details from both.
  • Addresses: Check email and postal addresses before treating a card as redundant.
  • Context: Look at the company, notes, and labels that help you recognize the person.

For example, “Alex Morgan” with a work email and “Alex Morgan” with a family phone number might be one person with complementary details. They might also be different people. A matching name alone does not settle that question.

Apple’s Contacts instructions describe two different actions:

  1. In Contacts, choose View Duplicates below My Card when it appears. Open a suggested contact to inspect it, then merge the entries you have checked. Apple also offers Merge All; review individual suggestions if you are uncertain.
  2. For entries you want displayed together, open a contact and choose Edit → Link Contacts, select the other card, then choose Link.

Linking makes a unified view of cards from different accounts; it does not merge those source cards. Apple also notes that edits to a unified contact can copy into the source accounts where that information exists. Use the instructions for your iOS version if the controls differ.

Where Phone Doctor fits

Phone Doctor’s current App Store listing lists duplicate and incomplete-contact tools and contact backup. It is an option if you want those alongside photo and video review in one app.

Check the current features, compatibility, and in-app purchases before downloading. Inspect suggestions yourself and make a contact backup before making changes. This guide does not demonstrate Phone Doctor’s contact screens or promise that every duplicate will be detected.

Have a recovery route before making changes

For contacts stored in iCloud, Apple documents restoration from an earlier archived version. Restoring is a library-level action: understand its effect before using it to fix one card. iCloud’s archive is separate from any backup you create in another app, and it does not establish recovery coverage for contacts held by a different provider.

After your first change, search for the person again and check their essential details. Stop and investigate if a number or address is missing before processing more cards.

If your main problem is a full phone, use the iPhone storage guide to identify what occupies space. Tidying contacts is an organization task; this guide makes no claim about a storage or speed improvement.
